Governor Phil Murphy, alongside Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin and the New Jersey State Police, has revealed a remarkable achievement in the expungement process in the state. The announcement highlighted a substantial decrease in the backlog of expungement orders, showcasing a significant step towards providing individuals with a fresh start.

Governor Murphy expressed pride in the administration's commitment to second chances, stating, “Our Administration believes in second chances, and we’re proud to have processed over 100,000 expungements orders to date.” The Governor emphasized the importance of expunging criminal records to expand opportunities for those who have rehabilitated their lives.

Attorney General Platkin reiterated New Jersey's dedication to supporting individuals who have faced obstacles due to past mistakes. He noted, “True reform includes helping to remove the stigma associated with an arrest or conviction that often stands in the way of success.”

Colonel Patrick J. Callahan, Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police, emphasized the organization's commitment to fostering trust in the criminal justice system through the expedited clearance of backlogged records. He highlighted the support received from Governor Murphy and Attorney General Platkin in improving the efficacy of the expungement process.

Director of Criminal Justice J. Stephen Ferketic underlined the significance of each expungement order processed, stating, “Each processed expungement order reflects an important step in an individual’s efforts to improve their life after moving through the criminal justice system.”

The concerted efforts of the state authorities have led to a substantial reduction in the expungement backlog, with the New Jersey State Police actively working to clear remaining orders eligible for processing. The establishment of the Expungement Unit and the implementation of innovative programs have contributed to streamlining the expungement process and resolving cases efficiently.

As of the end of March 2024, the Expungement Unit has processed 58,198 final orders, with 19,874 applications pending. The ongoing collaboration with stakeholders within the criminal justice system aims to further reduce this backlog, continuing the progress towards providing individuals with a fresh start and opportunities for a brighter future.
